I have just seen a schematic from the 1950's it has a few cap values in uufd, would that mean pico-farad?,thanks.

Yes
A 3.5 digit 4.5 digit 5 digit 5.5 digit 6.5 digit 7.5 digit DMM is good enough for most people.

From that era, you may also find "mmfd" as an abbreviation for pF.
