buying advice for psu
« on: April 14, 2017, 06:00:09 pm »
Hi guys,

I started off wanting to build my own psu but it's taking me too long and I don't have confidence in it either.

i'm still a beginner so it's best if i buy one to use for the mean time i think.

I want a proper adjustable lab power supply with current limit displayed on separate display in advance (i.e no shorting out the output to set the limit)

I found Thurlby on ebay is this a good suppply?

Thurlby (Aim TTi) are good, and that's a good price but note the postage costs. It's listed as working so you should be able to return it if it does not perform.  I suspect that you will have to turn-off the output if you want to set the current limit - I have the older LCD version but I don't find this a problem.

I would only buy it if I could get a service manual.  Otherwise I would get an old HP.

Yes, its a popular supply if you live in the UK or the EU.  There are better brands from that era for US buyers of US and Japanese makes: HP [not Agilent], Power Designs, Lambda, Kikusui etc., and they go for about the same price, $50-100, shipped.  You can google the PL310 for repair issues and schematics.
Best Wishes,

The service manuals are readily available - just search this forum.
