Component sorting out day
« on: October 06, 2012, 10:29:09 am »
Hello everyone, Up early today sorting out components values ect 4/5 band resistors, there are so many different values, I  feel  as if I need a complete racking system for just them. I'm thinking of compacting this to say anything from 1ohm to 10 k in the one compartment and so -on or can any of you think of a better way, over the years I've collecteded 100's of them, then it  the caps mine field types values, I can feel a headache coming on.

If you watch ebay you can find old (um, "vintage") Ohmite red devil cabinets for about 20-25 USD. Usually they have a few old carbon resistors in them too which you can sell as a lot on ebay to get some of that back (here they go for as much as a dime each for 1/4W and a buck each for 2W). The cabinets have 40 nice compartments, and (I think) they look cool. They're also made to interlock for stacking.

You can buy modern versions of these of course, but they're not really any cheaper and they don't look as cool. Mojo.

I found what I was looking for this E12 system of Dave's seem to condense things better for my room

I used to have my resistors sorted into four E12 ranges and stored in one 25 bins draw (5x5), each bin had a divider so could take two values.

The 4 ranges were
100R -> 820R
1K -> 8.2K
10K -> 8.2K
100K -> 820K
Plus 2 extra slots for <100R and >1M

So there were (4x12) + 2 = 50 values (2 per bin = 25 bins needed) which is perfect for one 25 draw bin.

Later on i got a massive resistor component stock from someone and their resistors were all E24 so i had to redo the system. I moved it all to E24 and added a new range 10R -> 91R.
So the new system needed (5x24)+2 = 122 values or 61 draws (two 5x5 bins plus a bit of a 3rd bin)

Over the years i added more bins, now i have 11 :D http://psi.abcom.co.nz/components.jpg
Nuts/bolts, resistors, film caps, electro caps, tantalum caps, ceramic caps, diodes, lots of draws for random stuff.

This seems a good idea, something i've notice the 5 band resistors seem to be more near their rated value than the 4 band ones , i'm going to use yor method, if that's OK.

the lazy way would be to only buy SMD components on a reel. Mount the reels in order and any components removed from the reel and not used or removed from the work piece go straight into the rubbish bin.

How about a little re-purposing? I use old diskette holders to arrange resistor values. They hold about 1,000 1/4 watt resistors. Easy to find the right value. Of course if the resistors are already free-floating, then this method would be a pain in the arse.

I used the 5 1/4 inch ones to hold cd's and DVD's.
