How can Chip-on-Board lower costs of production?? Why do  use and throw products prefer Chip-On-Board??

https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/how-chip-on-boards-are-made/all

I was going thru the above link . My primary understanding was chip on board offer dead cheap manufacturing process. But it looks like during manufacture chip board undergo many different process. How is it cost effective than using a single uC chipset and wave soldering ?? no separate process needed

My assumption is that chip on boards are pre-programmed controllers.

Please educate

The cost of the packaging itself becomes significant in high-volume applications.

Yep. Event the cost difference between WLCSP and BGA or QFN is significant in large quantities. It may be 1/3 of the cost of the whole device.

I don't think there is a huge cost difference between WLCSP  and COB, but I imagine board cost is higher for WLCSP.

And most modern device can be programmed in-circuit, so it is not a big deal.
