MOSFET for BLDC Motor
« on: November 15, 2019, 10:53:34 pm »
Hello,

I have spent quite some time on this, but I seem to have reached an impasse far earlier than expected.

I am currently working on a project with some friends where we need to control a brushless dc motor. To save money we used one from an old drone and managed to find approximate specifications for it. Now I am tasked, with designing a custom controller board for it, but this is where I am stuck.

The motor will be expected to run on somewhere between 10-20 V - depending on the batteries - and a couple of Amps. It will only be used in short bursts, and the torque required is very low.

I have decided on a sensorless, i.e. no feedback loop, approach, but I have no idea for how to choose MOSFETs and gate drivers.
Any recommendations for these? I am not looking for anything fancy nor very specialized, but rather a 'quick', one size fits it all solution.

Any help is appreciated,

Leo

Btw, I have not really used MOSFETs before, except in dc load circuits, but will try fathom the relevant chapters in The art of electronics.

if you want quick and easy, just get an ESC from you nearest hobby store

Well, we kinda want to design as much as possible ourselves.

Looking at your bio, you appear to be from Denmark as well, do you know of any store that would sell ESCs around here, except for the internet of course.

Thanks,

Maybe one of those SOP-8 dual N-MOSFET thingies, like the IRF7103 or Si9945?

That's exactly what I am looking for!
Thanks!

Do you by any chase have any experience in using these in BLDC motor controllers?

Not really, not yet. I've been looking into designing a BLDC motor controller myself, though, and those are the MOSFETs I'll try to source ;D

I have decided on a sensorless, i.e. no feedback loop, approach

Sensorless BLDC drive is not without feedback, but uses back EMF for feedback, thus requiring a certain rotation speed before it works.

Are you perhaps talking about PMSM drive? This is a different control topology, but the same type of motor.
