Copy of Art of Electronics
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:46:25 pm »
Does anyone know where I can get a cheap copy of art of electronics? They seem to be very expensive wherever I look.
Also, I heard there is a new edition coming out this year or next. Should I hold of getting a copy until then? Is art of electronics dated enough that this should be a concern?

Thanks!

Amazon sells it for $77.88; used for $46.89; used plastic comb binding for $16.75. Get the hardcover, though. There are some illegal ebook torrents available, too, but I would recommend updating your antivirus software first. I wouldn't hold out for the revised version, as the current one rules and you would be without it 'til the next is released.

It's often been said that the 3rd edition will build on the 2nd more as an addendum than a replacement.
I feel your pain on the price, but I picked a used hard back version up from Amazon last March and for me it was definitely worth it. You'll probably be glad you did.

"We should say that new editions of the texts that we use in this course are due in about a year and a half (and always have been). So, you may want to shop for used copies of both books—then buy the hot new editions in 2010-11?" (PDF)

If it comes out, it comes out. It would be nice, but it won't make the 2nd Ed any less relevant.

Phil Torrone was talking about this on the adafruit "ask an engineer" video program today, claims it could be another 18 months at least. Just get the second edition and have fun  :D
For second hand books, I've found http://betterworldbooks.com to be very good, they often have sales and give percentages to literacy charities and so on. Have got a literal bookshelf of interesting and also vintage books from them.

Used book sites like abebooks, alibris or biblio are often a good start. I happen to look at them first, before trying amazon. Sometimes you see the same seller offering the same book on several of these sites, but with different prices or shipping costs.
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

The third edition has been "12 months away" for absolutely years now, so I wouldn't bother holding out on it at all. The main thing that is missing from the second edition is digital design and quite a few designs that are quite irrelevant now as you'd just buy a single package instead of building from scratch.
On the whole though it is a very good book and one that you'll be keeping by your side for absolutely years so it's probably best you think of it as an investment when you begrudgingly shell out so much for it.

Yeah, the upshot is that most of the stuff where AoE falls short is stuff where you realistically need a specialized text or a data sheet or a journal article anyway. An updated version can only do so much to address that.

I got a copy for £40 on amazon,

Then I went and bought a NEW "manual of electronics and telecommunications" for £50 in italian ! 2000 pages of real content properly organized covering pretty much everything including a section on maths and physics being the very book I used to take out of the library at school when Il ived in italy the only advantage I've ever had out of being able to read/speak Italian. The brits and yanks have something to learn about REAL textbooks

If you're getting it now you might as well wait. The new edition is supposedly coming out January/February sometime. The current one is missing some stuff from what I hear.

There is a Cambridge low price edition of the book which I think sold in India,  they are in English and you can usually find them cheap on ebay.

scribd.com charged 5 bucks to download this book in PDF. Not as nice as a hard cover, but ok to look it over.

Is the scribd.com version just scanned, or is it a proper export? ie: Is it searchable?

Hmmm  they must have changed the rules or maybe only some things are free. I downloaded several books off scribd.a few months ago for free.   They are scanned versions so you can't search them. I print everything out on good paper  and then use a book binder from work.
