Could anyone tell how to design 16x32 RGB LED matrix ?
« on: December 03, 2018, 04:42:11 pm »
Hello All,

I want to design 16 x 32 RGB LED matrix...I have seen some mono colour LED matrices and get to know how to drives it using LED driver likes STP16DP05...But, when you come into RG matrices, each LED has 3 pins for RGB...Here, each needs to be connected to each constant current sink channel of the STP16DP05 that have a total of 16 channels...Could anyone share your knowledge on this and give some guidance ?.

Thanks,
Muthu

RGB matrix has 3x more LEDs then single color matrix, so essentialy you will need a lot of channels for driving it.

You can multiplex array with shift registers like STP16DP05 or use LED matrix driver with memory, like Holtek HT1632C. It can drive 8x32 or 16x24 LED matrix.

I personally have designed a 48x48 RGB LED Matrix using the TLC5958 from TI. They are really nice to work with! You should take a look into them. They can drive 32 by 16 RGB LEDs with multiplexing at max, but depending on what brightness you want you might want to split your matrix up into 2 or 4 drivers.
