Using FY3224 Signal Generator on Ungrounded Mains
« on: March 15, 2019, 07:34:57 am »
Hi guys, i bought FY3224 signal generator recently.  I read/watched that there is large AC voltage appearing between the ground and
and the neutral. The mains in the house is not grounded, just two prong  My question is will the problem appear even the mains is not grounded? Thanks.

The problem will be the same without a ground pin.

The source is from small caps from the output ground to both lines of the mains input. These are kind of required to meet EMI requirements for a switched mode supply. So you should find this with many other parts, when there is no ground.
So not have ground connection can cause a similar problem with other instruments too, that are normally grounded.

There is a monster thread on the FY6600 here https://www.eevblog.com/forum/testgear/feeltech-fy6600-60mhz-2-ch-vco-function-arbitrary-waveform-signal-generator/msg1343235/#msg1343235

There is some simple low cost fixes I did to mine to bring it under control over the next few pages. Basically Feelcrud now hiding under their new name of Feelelec still haven't sorted out their power supplies  :horse:

I read that one of the solution is to tie the ground of the bnc's to the earth ground. In my case, my mains is not grounded so I can't use that fix. Is replacing the switching power supply by linear supply the best solution in my case?

I measured the voltage between either of the two main prongs and the bnc ground and its 92Vac. Is that a effect of switching power supply? Thanks in advance.

Depending on your setup can you pickup a metal waterpipe or drive an earth into the ground at a minimum? Not just for the Feeltech but for other gear and even your safety allowing Earthing of metal cases. You could look at a change of supply but a lot of the Chinese options are a crap shoot for where they sit.

How can i measure the leakage effects of the switching power supply? Where should i probe for leakage signals?
Thanks .
