Design an enclosure for a small DC motor to decrease noise?

This is for a hobby project. A small DC motor is battery powered. The motor is geared and it produces a bit of noise at high speed. The goal is to design an enclosure for it so that the output shaft protrudes out and drives a load but the noise is largely dampened or isolated.

Any suggestions? For example, should there be a lot of air surrounding the motor inside the enclosure or it's better to fill it solid with a dampening material?

Rigid foam is a good sound dampener. you can put it underneath the supports to prevent vibrations making their way to the floor. (thats the main medium for sound propagation, if something is resting on it)

Wood is good too. Another option is hanging motor containing things from chains or bungee cords.
