display/screen for rpi capable of cold weather
« on: February 05, 2018, 04:19:56 pm »
Hi! im building a project for a rpi + seek thermal, i went outside today with my setup which has a waveshare 3.5a display and after 1min the screen started displaying artifacts and a very slow update rate, desaturation, massive color banding etc... everything that could go wrong went wrong basicly and im wondering if you guys know any screen that can withstand the sub zero temperatures of sweden, we are talking about -20, doesnt have to have touch screen, i could just use a controller/external keyboard but yeah help me out here!

requirements (celcius)
capable of working under sub zero temperatures (-20C minimum)
3.5" up to 5"
30hz/30fps

thanks for the help!

Kyocera, take a look at their automotive displays -

Also used in extreme cold environments have been resistive pad heaters.
But not for low power designs. Google "resistive pad heater lcd".....

edit : find them on mouser :) hopefully they are not too expensive! mouser website seems really f****** slow... any european stores anyone could recommend?
edit2: kyocera screens are too expensive, maybe there is a way for me to make my current screen capable of operating in the sub temperatures?

thanks but i cant see anywhere to purchase their stuff and it feels like their products are kind of really expensive also, they dont have any backlight so it wouldnt be possible to use the screen outdoors during the day...

OLED screens have no refresh artifacts at temperatures even below -40 degrees.  Cheap ones do exist, but, good luck finding one in you are not ordering in the thousands or more.

another method is to use some small power resistors to keep the display warm. dont want it to get hot, just above freezing I think.. or maybe a lil higher..

Lower cost than Kyocera is -

But Kyocera displays outstanding appearance, specs alone do not tell everything.
