Do magneto-resistive sensors get confused by high strength magnetic fields?

I have a HMC5883L which gives sensible results when measuring the earth's magnetic field but gives erratic nonsensical behaviour once you have exceeded the 8.1Ga measurement limit and for several seconds afterwards. Is there some sort of recovery time or hysteresis effect?
The datasheet https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/HMC5883L_3-Axis_Digital_Compass_IC.pdf doesn't say anything and I couldn't find anything on Google that talks about this.
