To make a large servo motor they disconnected the motor inside a small servo then used the motor signal as the input to a high current motor driver and completed the feedback loop via a mechanical linkage from the large motor to the small servo arm.
Presumably the circuitry inside the small servo was designed around the characteristics of the tiny motor originally used, however it seemed equally good at driving a much larger motor. Is that to be expected, or was it just good luck that it worked so well?
