Eagle CAD modify an existing footprint
« on: August 13, 2023, 05:52:29 pm »
I've seen posts on the Eagle forum; but nothing seems to work for me.
I'm trying to make the mounting pads of a potentiometer footprint to have a small diameter.
What I've done is right click on the part > open footprint then edit the diameter and saved my changes.
I also updated the library on my .brd file.
When I go to "open footprint" again my part remains changed but no changes are shown on the pcb.
My part does not show up modified on the preview when I try to replace it though.
It does not show as modified on the preview when I browse its library either.
Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

I think you actually have to swap out the part for the "new" one.

You need to copy the part to a library file you own. (open library file, then rightclick on part and "copy device to library")
Then you make your changes and save the library.
Then you need to REPLACE the component. (the replace tool)

If you need to change it more, then modifications to existing components in libraries are only applied when you do an UPDATE. (library->update)

One small addition to "copy" that applies at least to versions 7.x and below.  It may apply to later versions too.  When copying, be sure to have all layers showing.
