Easiest way to get into external RAM interfaces

Hello,

I would like to get into external RAM interfaces (such as SDRAM, DDR1 etc.) - what would be the easiest way to do this?

I think the STM32F4-Series has some microcontrollers which have a external multi-purpose bus interface.

I also thought about using an FPGA where I can directly model the memory controller.

What would you recommend?
