"Refurbished" car amplifier, hack job much?
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:55:33 pm »
Some poor guy bought this as refurbished...

Ah, what did they use to refurbish it? a burning stick?

So, one fan has been disconnected for some reason?

Oh, and so has the other?

Oh... I see...

Seems about right for a car audio amp rated at 8000 watts RMS. The buyer probably paid less than it would cost to wire that thing for the 600+ amps it would need to perform as advertised.

Fan disconnected because it was noisy. Important thing was did it blow up when plugged in? There might have been enough left to operate somewhat, even with half the power inverter stages blown out and with all the damaged and blown traces these disconnecting the shorted silicon.

The Torx screws are clearly to blame, it just encourages them.

The amp is not that old.  Could have almost been a warranty repair.

I've seen some bad refurbs in my time, but this one takes the biscuit. At least the ones I saw WORKED.

That's some shonky business right there.

This was a Taramps hd8000, they're a Brazilian made amp, high power for their size, using some weird technology that I'm not really sure about :p

My comment was that it would have worked better before this guy tried to fix it, and that the quote to re-repair it would be an extra $200 because there would now be a few more hours rework due to the hacked up board!  |O

I don't know this particular brand, thus I had to look it up. Specs are at this page, and it says it draws a peak of 817A when outputting a 1kHz sinewave!  :wtf:

A review of a smaller unit is here.

Some Brazilian manufacturers produce good and sturdy high powered amps, mostly due to "Carnaval" and something we call "Trio elétrico" (Electric trio): a truck-mounted assembly of diesel generators, amplifiers, mixers, lighting systems and a stage that accommodates a band and all staff during several days while the "Carnaval" lasts.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
