How new is this device? What is its USB vid:pid? Is there a crystal on the other side (obscured by the battery - what's underneath?) and what is its frequency, if any?

I'm guessing it's 8051-based.

No crystal on it
there a brand name JIE LI
now we know that JC is not a JC but a JL i guess for JIE LI
its say model number AC309N in the usb parameter for the driver
for the vid pid i am not sure where to get it
i wonder why there a place for a crystal on the board but there no crystal there

Their website is mostly inoperable. But you can contact them.

those 2 last link are interesing
i wonder if we can download the firmware from the device
there a files named isd_download.exe i guess its rather to download on the device the firmware or something like that
to get a backup and then try to upload a modified one on it

I found some more info and the datasheet at http://code.google.com/p/kt-rec-pro/ (http://code.google.com/p/kt-rec-pro/) , which has been assembled at http://www.mediafire.com/?l4442yn98m5cb02 (http://www.mediafire.com/?l4442yn98m5cb02)  for your convenience.

As I predicted, it's an 8051-based :D
Quote
High performance 8-bit MCU
DC-48MHZ operation
Compatible with 8051
All instructions are single-cycle except branching instructions
Two data pointer for indirect addressing
Program Memory
32K Bytes OTP program memory
But it's OTP so you won't be able to change the firmware.
