Fixing Calculator LCD missing pixels
« on: January 24, 2022, 02:14:04 am »
Please refer to below image this calculator LCD is missing pixels, when i press this ribbon cable it shows correct digits.  A quick google shows some people fixed it by applying hot air and some with soldering iron.
I want to know what is better option, hot air gun or soldering iron? (i have both tools) I also want to know what temperature should be applied in any case.
On some posts i saw that wide face metal is most helpful, any thoughts?

I’d use hot air and a pencil eraser. Heat the ribbon cable a bit, then take the eraser and press down on the cable and rub the eraser along the direction of the wires. I’ve managed to fix a few LCD issues by doing this.

I wouldn’t use a soldering iron. I’d be afraid I’d melt the cable.

Put a piece of paper over the ribbon and rub a soldering iron across that where the joint is. I've fixed the same problem on several Gameboy handheld games that way.

I think a hot air gun is better. But, sorry. I can't recommend any temperature without knowing the model number of the LCD and seeing its datasheet.

I use a proper TIP for that...

Mileage will vary but the proper the tool greater the chance..

Both bad idea...  in less than a second a wrong setting will melt the plastics

The problem with hot air is it just heats everything up but doesn't press the contacts together. You need to apply both heat and pressure to the adhesive to re-bond it.
