| Fun with FEMM magnetics simulator (am I doing this right?) |

To learn and possibly use as a design tool (if I eventually learn how to use and interpret it) I've downloaded the free FEMM magnetics (and other things) simulator Pictures attached are my attempt to simulate current density in a fairly big (12 cm x 16 cm x 6 cm core size) EE/EI transformer. The primary is 6 turns of 2 AWG (0.26" / 6.5mm diameter) The current is set to 350 amps @ 625Hz I had it integrate the losses in the areas of the conductors..it says 38W..hmmm This took maybe 20 minutes to generate the simulation results btw Next I will try to put a secondary. Any advice or tips would be welcome and appreciated The software is pretty straightforward to use..it has very simple inputs but I get the impression its very powerful at the same time.. If anyone has interesting simulation ideas I might draw it up and run it Edit: just noticed it has 7 turns...doesn't really matter that much at this point I guess. Edit: I think I did something wrong because its showing flux density in the core at 2T..should be a tenth of that. I think I know what it was..I will re-sim |
