Good book for beginner about amplifiers.
« on: September 27, 2015, 08:20:18 am »
Hello

I have been curious about building a decent (or even super great) sound system for my self.
Is there any really good book or series of books that can explain amplifiers and filters in a good way that even a novice hobbyist like me can build a system that makes an audiophile (not an audiofool) say "that is actually pretty decent".

don't just want download a schematic that says "high end" I want to know how the damned thing works not just build one. :-/O

The good news is there  are more stars in the universe than buildable amplifier designs (each of them with their own degree of "decency")
The bad news is there are just too many damn designs to choose from :)

Once you have a "decent" amp, then you need a decent source, and decent speakers and the adventure begins  :)

Books: start with Audio Power Amplifier Design

If three 100  Ohm resistors are connected in parallel, and in series with a 200 Ohm resistor, how many resistors do you have?

Also take a look at  https://www.passdiy.com/

But since you want to build and not buy, you should not go here http://www.firstwatt.com/
or here https://passlabs.com/

:)

Enjoy the adventure

Millman & Halkias's texts are some of the best classics with a good mix of fundamental physics and practical applications for those who want to know how it all works. Here is one that is free to download from archive.org and covers the topic you're interested in: https://archive.org/details/ElectronicDevicesCircuits. In the usual Millman & Halkias style, the first half of the book deals with the fundamental physics behind it all and the second half is about practical applications.

Another book you might want to check out is Ian Hickman's "Analog Electronics" (chapter 4 esp.).

today DIY Audio Amp building is about being a electronics hobbyist - not about "superior sound" or cost saving

a point to consider is that it is arguable that power amps for audio are pretty much a solved problem - researchers in Psychoacoustics don't believe there are differences worth bother with between basically competent audio amplifiers
the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society had many amplifier articles 1970-80's, very few since

Dr Geddes researched, published listening test results for his "GedLee Metric" - and bought ~$200 Pioneer audio amps at Costco to demo his ~$4K each speakers

DIY for better sound involves speakers, speaker directivity/location, room treatment - not the electronics

transparent electronics mass manufactured usually cost much less than hobbyists can buy just the raw parts for - often less than a DIY hobbyist would have to spend on power supply or case alone

http://www.cordellaudio.com/book/ and Pass books are both really somewhat advanced - you really need to be solid on the basics of circuits to get much from them - very good for an EE wanting to quickly get up to speed on audio amps

I love the "The Beast With a Thousand JFETs" (2013) in the articles section. Who needs heatsinks? :) I want one!  Stunning distortion performance too.
