| Ground pole in a DIY bench power supply from scratches |

Goodmorning everyone, I’m new here so hope to write this discussion in the right place, I’m also new in electronics but I thought it was time to start learning some serious electronics apart from arduinos and similar. I would like to know where the ground output plug in the front panel should be wired in a bench power supply made from pre existing boards and supplies. Sould it be wired to the ground pole of the input ac power, should it be wired to the metal case of the wired power supply or somewhere else? Would also ask what are the main advantages of having the ground output plug other than allowing the connection in sequence of two power supplies. Thank you very much for your attention. Again sorry for the lacks in knowledge and terminology. Hope to fill them with some serious study of books and experience. |

The green ground jack should be connected to earth ground. So should any exposed metallic surfaces. So, bring the earth ground inside the cabinet and bolt it to the chassis. Then run a wire from the jack to the same place. Look inside a piece of commercial equipment and see how they did it. Look at some of Dave's 'tear down' videos. He always goes over the grounding. |

The ability to put power supplies in series requires that the power supplies be properly isolated from their power source. Proper Lab/bench supplies usually are properly isolated. Whether or not you make use of the ground terminal is irrelevant. PC and generic device supplies typically are not. Do not try to put them in series. |

I found a picture of a quite cheap power supply and noted the wiring you say but being unbranded I preferred to ask here to be sure. Thank you again! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
