Hameg 604-3 test waveform
« on: August 09, 2020, 09:41:39 am »
Hi

I'm a beginner just buying my first lab equipment. I have bought a Hameg 604-3 oscilloscope on eBay that the vendor didn't know if it worked or not (inherited and they weren't a technically inclined and didn't know anything about scopes) the photos showed that the LEDs on the control panel lit up OK but there was nothing on the CRT.  As yet I have no signal generator.
So the question is does the 604-3 have the ability to generate a test waveform itself so I can check if it works?

If it doesn't it was cheap so no huge loss but it would be nice to be able to quickly determine if its a completely dud or not.

Thanks

Hi

Yes, most scopes have a test square wave signal to allow correct adjustment of scope probes.

On the Hameg 604-3 the test signal is just below the crt on the far left.

A lot of scopes have minor issues which are fairly easy to correct. Check the panel controls are set up first properly and try and get a stable single channel trace out of it first. You don’t need a test signal for that.  If that fails various forum members here can probably talk you through an evaluation and/or repair.

If you’re new to this, post a picture of the entire front panel with it powered up to see what situation is.

It’s a very nice analogue scope when it’s working so worth pursuing a repair if needed.

Thanks I will.

I started a degree in Electrical engineering back in the early 80s but dropped out and fell into computing and have been a network engineer for over 30 years. So I am not completely clueless on the basics of electronics but its been a very long time :) Never thought back then that it would be possible to own the kind of kit you can now for a home lab, its amazing really,

Did exactly the same thing here :)

Haven’t had an EE job for 21 years now I think it is.
