Hand held Oscilloscope
« on: April 10, 2022, 02:29:37 pm »
I have a Rigol 1054 bench scope but looking for a portable oscilloscope to take low voltage (0 to 20VPP) signal readings for a model RR command control system.  Scopes under consideration are;  Owon HDS242, Mustool MSD8207. & Mustool MDS120M which are all in the $90-$130 range.    Any suggestion of what would be a good portable scope to purchase or ones to avoid?

Thanks

The Owon has two channels and comes from a known manufacturer with a home page.
The two others are one channel, comes from a no-name "manufacturer" and the specs
are a bit "inflated". You could also look at the Hantek handhelds.

If you are looking for a battery powered scope to allow you to take floating measurements, that's different than what you get with an AC-powered unit. Its a difference that may be important too.

Considering how portable your Rigol 1054 is, like most modern oscilloscopes, I think it would be a waste of money to buy something more portable because of the lack of performance compared to your Rigol 1054.  If you need floating or differential measurements, then buy a high voltage differential probe instead to use with your Rigol 1054.

I understand the basic information of these scopes but was looking to see if anyone has tried any of these and what their experience was.  My current application is to measure FSK type signals in locations where it's hard to bring a bench top scope to.

Good Morning David,   I got an Owon HDS272, (without the AWG), and I've got it hooked to my UTG962 and my Siglent SDS1202X-E comparing the 2 scopes, and they both give identical good results.  I got the Owon instead of getting a differential probe for my Siglent, so I could connect to mains voltages in my testing.  As a bonus I now have a nice extra DMM.
