HELP! New to HW, hobbyist RF collection/analysis
« on: November 27, 2018, 03:50:53 pm »
Okay, so, I am super new to hardware when it comes to anything RF related. Meaning, I have very little idea, as to which direction I should go. My hobby/project is analyzing a signal, starting from visual identification (bandwidth, center frequency, etc etc), down to the literal 1's and 0's. The frequency range(s) I would like to look at is 1MHz - 6GHz, with no particular thing in mind, just want try to analyze and figure out some HAM signals that my mentor sends out occasionally (he doesn't have internet or phone, otherwise I'd probably be asking him these questions). My questions are....

1- What hardware do I need?
I've been looking at this package http://nutsaboutnets.com/sidekick/

2- I would ideally like to use one of the below to do visual analysis, but definitely not limited to them.
    https://edoras.sdsu.edu/doc/matlab/toolbox/signal/wvtool.html
         or
    https://www.silvaco.com/products/analog_mixed_signal/waveform_viewer/waveform_viewer.html

3- I currently don't know of any open-source or commercially available software that would allow me to perform demodulation or post-demodulation analysis, any recommendations?

4- Would the nutsaboutnets sidekick or another SDR suit my purposes? Or do I need to delve more into the HW realm and get in way over my head?  |O
