How is this connector called?
« on: June 26, 2021, 07:11:49 am »
What connector is the one with 5 pins, on the bottom right, just above the 6 pin XH?
The pitch seems to be 5.08mm (0.2") for the normally spaced pins and 7.62 (0.3") for the key pin.
The actual board is this one https://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=52448
I am pretty sure in the past I saw this type of connectors inside CRTs as well.

Probably a variant or clone of Molex KK 508. Found it quickly using Digi-Key’s parametric search (rectangular connectors - headers, male; mating pitch: 5.08mm; rows: 1; contact shape: circular; shrouding: none).

It looks like this specific connector is standard in CGA arcade machines. It may be custom, as it seems to belong to a harness described by Japan Amusement Machine and Marketing Association (JAMMA).

There are quite a few results if you google "CGA JAMMA 5-pin". But it always comes up with readily available connectors without a specific part number.

It is sold as an assembly in many places. For example https://www.newegg.com/p/2CT-0015-000G0 But connector part number is never mentioned as far as I can see. And it is always sold with already crimped wires. I assume this is because it caters to people working on arcade machines, which don't necessarily have crimpers.

Although it looks like the connector is designed to match one on CRT monitors. So JAMMA just used whatever monitor industry was already using.

And looking at arcade-related forums, they also have no clue what this connector is called and where to get bare connectors. And they would have figured by now if it was a common part.

Oh, it's JAMMA? So it's a Japanese standard, so a focus on Japanese connector manufacturers is usually helpful.

A quick look at the JST website and voilà, it's the JST V connector. (It's 5.0mm pitch, not 5.08mm, hence it not showing up in my prior parametric search. The keying pin is spaced at 7.5mm.)

The pictures of its female plug also seem to match the photos of the JAMMA plugs.

And looking at arcade-related forums, they also have no clue what this connector is called and where to get bare connectors. And they would have figured by now if it was a common part.
Nah, most people just suck at searching (just as most people suck at researching). And those that do succeed often then hoard their knowledge so they can resell at a huge markup, rather than sharing the knowledge for others. (That is, unless they were searching for themselves, quickly found the answer, and then just ordered it.)

With that said, a reverse search for 'JAMMA "JST V"' finds numerous forum replies and sales listings supporting this identification.

The downside is that it doesn't seem to be regularly stocked by any of the major distributors. JST's own website sells at very reasonable conditions and shipping, but for some items (like that header) there's a minimum quantity that makes it uneconomical if you just need a few pieces. :/
