Inductor traces vs inductor component?

I am making a receiver to an RF remote control and in the datasheet for the receiver chip do it show that you (optional) can add a filet, containing an inductor, made as a trace. Is there any good reason for using a trace instead of an inductor component? I mean the trace inductor do take up a lot of space.
