How can i design a battery from laptop's battery
« on: December 10, 2013, 04:00:35 am »
I have several unused HP laptop batteries and i want to design a bigger battery and charging circuit by taking all cells out of the laptop battery. is this possible?

Possible ? Yes

Safe ? Probably not, especially looking at the way you ask the question that I guess it shows your knowledge level on these topic. A fire extinguisher standing by near vicinity when you play with it is highly recommended.

Rechargeable batteries based on Lithium can catch fire or explode if not properly charged which is why laptop batteries and cell phone batteries have more than 2 pins on them. There is almost always a pin that relays charging information back to the circuit so that the batteries are not charged incorrectly. If you remove the cells from the battery you are bypassing the safe charging circuit design and can potentially have a dangerous situation.

AFAIK there's a pretty sizeable number of the population using unprotected 18650s in torches, with an extremely low incidence of fires and the like, but still, use common sense and don't push the cells beyond their specs.

I don't know about HP batteries but I know there are some configurations of battery protection and charger circuits that allow the host (laptop) to interrogate the pack. If the host does not like what it sees it will not switch on the battery power FET.

I took apart a Dell laptop battery pack for the cells.  You just have to make sure you don't short any of the cells or circuitry while you're dissecting them.  Better to do that outside to be on the safe side.

you need a fire extinguisher specialized for li-ion batteries, that is with carbonic snow inside, beside the area of work
or do it outside...

thx for all replies. I am planning to take batteries apart n use cells. any good reference for designing charging circuitry for these cells?
