How to re-solder SMT nut / stand-off to motherboard PCB
« on: October 10, 2019, 12:15:18 am »
My computer motherboard has M.2 stand-offs soldered into its PCB.

When over tightened one of screws, the stand-off broke off.

Good news is that it broke from the soldered joint; the motherboard is fine.

Bad news is that this is a very compact crowded computer motherboard.

I appreciate recommendations on how to solder the SMT nut back without damaging the board or components.

I have access to professional grade soldering station and an pro analog heat gun with 5 mm nozzle.

I circled around the nut and its place on PCB in the photo attached.

One idea I have was to preheat the nut to reduce the soldering time.

Epoxy it in place. You will get much better mechanical strength. Use the original screw to align everything
