How to remove hot glue?
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:34:43 am »
Is there a trick to removing hot glue from parts and PCBs with SMD?

I fear that if I start pulling I might rip some SMD components from the PCB.

Use hot air to melt it and wipe it off gently, then repeat.

Put it in the freezer. Then while it still cold, poke the glue, it will just fall off without leaving residue. Of course this will work if this is really the hot glue, not some kind of silicone.

Isopropyl alcohol will do the trick. Just use a swab and rub it around the edges of the glued object and or the glue you want to remove and it will come right off. If you Google this you can find videos and all kinds of articles on the hows and whys. Hope this helps!

Cheap hot snot comes off without any stick poking, but real brand hot snot can be a bugger. I would suggest rubbing alcohol as someone else did.

Yep, i have not met a type of hot glue that likes isopropanol.
Either is will come of as a whole piece or it gets crumply and can easily be removed with a brush or poker.
First time trying this method i was stumped how well isopropanol works.

I got a big cannister of denatured ethanol and isopropanol for various tasks, no one should be without a good amount :)
