I keep killing mosfets - what I do wrong?

Long time back the mosfets (no esd diodes at that time on the chip) had the legs shorted by a piece of copper wire (a small spring actually). In harsh environment simply wind a thin wire around the legs and solder the transistor in. After soldering remove the wire.

That is unfortunately not that easy when soldering today's surface mount devices. :-/O
