AC - AC power supply, unregulated
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:54:02 am »
Hey Guys,

I'm putting together a kit headphone amp and have a quick question regarding the power supply.  Info on the PCB calls for a max input of 20VAC.  The power supply I have is 15VAC 1.5 amp and states output voltage will be higher if less than this rated current is being drawn.

I'm unsure of exactly how much this little amp will draw but I'm expecting nowhere near 1.5 amps, more likely 1 / 10th of that.  What I'm unsure of how much variance in output voltage to expect from the power supply, and if I should get another one.

Thanks!

Not really enough information to attempt any significant response.
WHAT "kit headphone amp"?  Do you have a URL or something where we can see what you are asking about?
Does it state a MINIMUM input voltage?
Do you have a meter?  Can't you measure the "open-circuit" voltage of your power transformer?
We could probably come up with a decent estimate if we had some information to work with,
At least a schematic diagram. Without that, we are shooting in the dark.

It's probably fine.

this is the one

voltage 14 - 20vac

I do have a meter, open circuit reading 17.75v - does that answer my own question  :-[

Simply measure the output voltage of your AC source when not connected to any load. If it is in excess of 20vac then don't use it with that board.
