idc/ribbon cable clamp/clip -- what are they called?
« on: January 03, 2017, 07:24:36 pm »
I need to make some cables,  where I'm splitting a 40 way IDC cable part way along it's length into 2x20.   I've seen these things that clip onto the cable preventing the split point going any further (see attached picture) that can also used to secure two separate cables together.

What are they called?     I've found "ribbon cable clamps" but they are bulky.  I don't need anything with mounting holes or cable-tie loops.

No offence intended, but  it it may have helped if you show the 'clamp' rather than the connector.
It's an interesting question.
Don't ask a question if you aren't willing to listen to the answer.

If I had a better picture I would have provided it but I don't.   It's the black thing wrapped around the cable in the picture I did provide.

It looks like it could be a ferrite EMI suppressor with a rubber boot

Do you know about Google IMAGE search?  If you Google for "flat cable clip"  or "ribbon cable clip" and then select "Images" you will see many different photos of similar things. Chances seem excellent that you will see what you are looking for so that you can narrow down your search.

No only am I aware of it, I already did it.    All the ones I found were designed to adhesive mount,  screw mount or had the cable tie clips.  Things designed to route cables inside enclosures etc.   Rather than just a free-hanging application like I had in mind where I didn't want anything especially bulky.  I figured something small would exist like the actual strain relief on the IDC connectors themselves.

Perhaps what I'm seeking doesn't exist,  or maybe the picture I attached,  what is being used to prevent the cables splitting is a misuse of something else (ferrite etc).

Wouldn't you solve this problem simply by applying a bit of adhesive tape / scotch tape at the place where the ribbon starts to separate in separate parts? Tape from one side to the other than back over the first side and you're done.

I think you would find some of what you're looking for in the Cable Management section on Newark/Farnell .. see  http://goo.gl/gUX2Gg

Or some straight examples like

2. http://uk.farnell.com/thomas-betts/fcc-3/clamp-cable-nylon-screw-mount/dp/1212500 or
3. http://uk.farnell.com/panduit/fcm2-a-c14/latching-mount-flat-cable/dp/1014959  (pack of 100)

I had a few of these and I remember that they were "crimped", so I did an image search using the following terms and got much more relevant results: "ribbon cable crimp connector". Good luck

hmmn, that just gets me results on crimping the IDC connector onto the cable.

The photo appears to be nothing but a ferrite with some heatshrink.
