identify component

Any idea what this is? I think it's some sort of input protection, but not sure what.

It's a 500mA pollyfuse.

That was just a typo. He meant PolyFuse. That is a resetable Fuse, something like this:

Yeah its a PTC fuse / poly fuse / resettable fuse.

The ones like that are usually for higher current or higher voltage. The small flat ones that look like a SMD resistor usually only have a voltage range upto ~10V.

I've used these on a few projects that have variable input voltage that exceeds the specs of the other type.
