I googled "871A" and came up with various sensors made by Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Maybe something to do with that? |

The previous replies are correct that it is the igniter electrode for a gas furnace. The end of the bent wire is where the spark jumps to a grounded metal part to ignite the gas from the pilot. Here is a stock photo of a similar assembly. |
