Impedance calculation double sided board
(1/1)
FriedMule:
Hi I have tried to calculate track impedance, using a online calculator but I do not know how to calculate my board.
It has a track on one side and a fill layer on the other side, both connected by vias.
How do I calculate the total impedance?
Illusionist:
There's a really useful, free tool you can download here:
http://www.saturnpcb.com/pcb_toolkit/
The impedance is calculated on: PCB (dielectric) material, thickness, copper thickness and track width. Note that board thicknesses are often given as copper+dielectric thickness, so if it's double sided 1.6mm, the dielectric is 1.6mm minus 2* the copper thickness.
The tool above is really handy because it does some of the conversions for you (for instance converts oz of copper layer to mm/mils etc). It can do a lot - have a play and get used to it.

So the track is connected to the fill with a via? And you need to know the impedance of this effective transmission line stub..?
