IR led transmitter and receiver

I have an unusual question. How the infra red LED's are called, the transmitter and receiver?
What are common wave lengths?
Most importantly, how they called in Russian? Because I went to a store and thought I'd buy me a set, but the old man asked how they called, and I had no idea. Not a bad store, they have everything. But to get something in particular I have to know how it's called, wavelength, etc, so it could be found.
