Some friends of mine own a machine shop, they have a bunch of Mitutoyo instruments that I don't even touch, they cost a fortune so I use the cheap tools or stuff that someone else has already abused. The problem with that sort of stuff is once it has been dropped or banged around it often is never the same again.

It is typical on this bidding site (I have seen the same lot of you) to have low start prices but mostly the prices will increase massively 10 minutes before closing.

A bid price while an auction is in progress is nothing more than a number, unless you have some inside info. If the seller thinks there is a good market for the goods they will start the bidding low just to gain a lot of attention. There are likely equipment dealers watching that know exactly what that stuff is worth. Bidding early on a closed time auction does nothing but push up the price.

With online auctions I've never understood why people bid at all early on, other than maybe a token bid to track the item. I've seen bidding wars break out with days remaining and unless I'm the seller I can only shake my head. All it does is drive the price up.

That said, I've also never understood why ebay doesn't have an option to extend the auction by a few minutes each time a bid comes in near the end, that would eliminate sniping and likely result in a higher sale price.

To the OP: unless money is really short, for this price I would take the first box - if anything, you may have some interesting projects or spare parts.

Although it makes perfect sense from a financial standpoint, I suspect the majority of customers dislike but tolerate auctions (in favor of Buy it now). I suspect that doing this would scare away even more potential customers.
