Question about those analog scope clocks

How do they blank between parts without a z-axis?  Do they go really slow on the changes for the visible parts and really fast on non visible parts and the intensity is turned lower?

If there is no z-axis used, then yes, they move the beam very quickly or may even move it beyond the bounds of the screen quickly.
