Is the power adapter for this unit powerful enough ?
« on: October 06, 2021, 02:52:41 pm »
I am looking at this unit: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003245839629.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_groupList.8148356.25.694068daxLjM4Q

It says that it accepts 24V ? but the adapter that comes with it is 19V/4.74A...

A similar unit has an adapter with 24V/3A : https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32857152188.html?spm=a2g0o.store_pc_groupList.8148356.1.7cea114aoacRV6

Is the 19V/4.74A adapter powerful enough for the unit ? or should I get the unit with the 24V/3A adapter ?

The Quicko is a 70W iron with a 72W supply . The Handskit is 72W with a 90W supply .

Sorry for being a n00b, You are saying the Handskit power supply is adequate ? It will have no problems driving the soldering station ?

I am asking because the voltage for the Handskit's power supply is lower...19V vs 24V

Also, which one would you buy out of the two ?

How can you trust any seller selling a soldering station as "iron welding tools"   :-X

If heaters are the same in both irons than lower supply voltage will result in slightly less peak power.

If the heater is designed for 70W at 24V that means it pulls ~3A from 24V and has 8Ω resistance.
You can do the math how much power you will get from 19V and how much current the supply will need to provide, but it's gonna be less.

That being said, I'm not sure if I would trust any PSU from AliE. Bottom of the barrel PSUs can be quite bad, with poor reliability and electric and fire safety hazards.

There is some chance that maybe the 19V version uses a different heater with less resistance, like there is many variants of the 936 style irons. You never know with those knockoffs. Do your research ::)

edit
If I were to buy something like that, I would look for an option of 24V rated unit sold without PSU and buy some brand name 24V/3A PSU locally.

You may be shocked to discover the "PSU" is just a nichrome wire voltage divider just wired straight to the wall outlet.   :palm:

Hmm, I haven seen that technology yet :-DD

But seriously, a crap switchmode PSU may overheat internally, it may fail, it may catch fire, it may short between the output and mains, all sorts of nasty stuff.

Can I use a 24V/5A power supply with the Handskit ? like this:? https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08N4R48LJ/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_1?smid=A14ES6EWTOQOR7&psc=1

Is this better than the power supplies from AliExpress ? I am going to need this power supply anyway for other projects. So it could be a wise idea to not buy the power supply from AliE ?

Also, between the Quicko and the Handskit, which one would you buy ?

Or you could get a used laptop power supply locally.
They should have reasonable quality and with real specs.
