Does the behavior of this multimeter look ok to you?

Mostly yes.

Looks like the probes are dirty or have a residue on them stopping good electrical contact.

This happens with all my probes that work fine on my other meters.

Hi

I have a u1252a.
Just tried it with the first pair of leads I could find, pair of uni-t leads.

I can replicate what you see if I use the probe lead nearest the sheath, I think the manufacturing release residue is still on the leads there.
If I hold the probes together at the indentation near the point tips, it finds the resistance and is stable.

Try a bare 4mm banana cable and just join the red and black sockets together.
Do you still get the hunting?

Try cleaning the sockets with cotton buds and a little ipa.
