LED lamp flicker On/Off
« on: October 27, 2024, 01:03:00 am »
At the plant I worked for they put in a good number of these LED lamps to replace the metal halide bulbs that were in the fixtures. The lamps can be use with or without ballast but the guy who installed them didn't want to spend the time to take the ballast out. Now some of the lamps are flickering on/off about every second or so. I wonder if this is because the ballast is bad or the lamp went bad?
I took a lamp home but can't get a Mogul base socket to at any local store to try it out with direct 120VAC.
Do you have any idea as to why the lamp goes on an off?
The lamp is this one

Home Depot seems to stock a bigger variety of electrical gear, I seem to recall seeing mogul stuff there, else you'll need to go to an actual electrical supply house where electricians shop.

Homedepot does sell them and also WW Grainger does sell them too but they don't have any at the stores.

I'm wondering if the ballasts aren't heating up and causing the bulbs to go into thermal shutdown?

Maybe ditch the ballasts.

That what I was going to do and so I need to get a socket. I don't want to get up the tall ceiling of the factory to take out the ballast.

I would get the contractor who installed them back to fix the problem. If you are an employee, there are all sorts of liability issues if you start messing with the ballast wiring, break your neck working at height etc. Depending on how long ago they were installed there may be some warranty on work and equipment supplied too.

If they didn't flicker when installed, but started weeks/months later, likely to be a lamp issue.
We have lots of these too, they started flickering and it was caused by dry capacitors inside the bulb.

if its just for testing solder a wire on the center connection, and twist another around the thread, bodgery at it finest but as long as you don't touch the shiny bits it'll be fine.

Actually the lamps were installed by an employee of the company. However, at this point I just want to determine if the problem is with the lamp or the ballast in the light fixture. If it's the ballast the we can have a plan to remove the ballast. If it's the lamp we would have to figure out something else. Changing from metal halide to LED our main purpose was to reduce the work of replacing the bulbs and these lamps weren't in there that long.

Found the problem. It's the power supply. So if we have more bad ones we will have to look for different lamps. Since it's not just a light bulb the base can easily be removed with 3 screws. Inside there are wires connect the base to the circuit board. I just removed the wire nuts that connect the wires from the base to the PCB. Attached a cable with a plug to the wires via WAGO nuts and I can test it quite safe. Yes the light flickered. I think something wrong with the power supply but I don't bother to fix it. Just dumped it.
