Title: Li-ion protection circuit

Hi folks. Thanks for any replies...

I believe the answer is "of course," but just checking. I should be able to use a protection circuit for 18650 batteries with 14500 batteries right? Guessing with voltage being the case ie. 3 cells = ~12V what is being safetied is the charging current right?

Its not really charging current that you are protecting against, its overcurrent when discharging or when the pack is shorted.
The overcurrent protection designed in for 18650's might be a bit high for 14500's.

But the main function is the under and over voltage protection, which would be the same.

The most common protection ICs e.g. DW01xx series use the resistance of the MOSFETs to set their current limits.
