Line following robot sensor circuit


So I am building a robot to follow white lines and I just wondered if anyone had any advice on which is the best way to do the sensor circuit.

I have been told to feed photo diodes into comparators, to feed photo transistors into hex schmitt triggers, to feed them directly into ADC converters and into the comparators on the PIC itself.

getting a bit indecisive now, which is the best way?

some sort of light detection system (reflected light from the white strip) to compare with the rest of the surface, so comparators sound like a good idea fed into a pic that will control steering

This guy built a line following tank without using a micro, it might be fun to take a look at it. I think it follows black lines on white, but it shouldn't be too hard to have it follow white lines on black!
