Looking for LED with wide viewing angle
« on: October 10, 2022, 07:42:27 am »
Google has failed me on this, nothing but residential lighting and wide screen TVs. I'm after an LED light source which will remain relatively bright when viewed from a wide range of angles, say about 60 degrees from frontal in all directions. Like a small incandescent bulb, which wouldn't work btw because short (15mS) flashes are involved. Supply can be up to 9 volts, with suitable current limiting if needed.

I could rig up multiple LEDs in series, but would like a single device for aesthetic reasons.

Is anyone aware of a type or source, only a very small number needed.

I think SMD LEDs often have quite a wide viewing angle, 0805 sized ones for example. The box like shape seems to encourage LED manufacturers to make them wide angle, whereas the dome shape of through hole T-1 3/4 style LEDs seems to encourage designs which focus the light in to tighter cones with thinner viewing angles, with far lower light intensity the further off axis you go.

A lot of websites let you order by viewing angle:

Digikey is a far better place to start your search than Google.

What color are you looking for? If you want white, what color temperature? How high CRI do you need?

If you're after through-hole LED's a search term you may wish to try is "straw hat"

These are the wide angle LED's used in christmas/fairy lights so that they can be seen from all different angles

This isn't what they're called on the likes of e14 (if they're even available there) but it should find you some on the likes of ebay

If you have "clear" LED plastic package, sand them with fine sandpaper to get a frosted package. That helps a lot with diffusing the light.

A Lambertian led is what you may be looking for.
