Looking for ultracapacitor in UK
« on: June 16, 2020, 08:00:26 am »
Hi all, we are looking for what be believe to be an Ultra Capacitor, the markings on it are ELNA 3.3v 02F, I will attach a blurry photo (sorry about that)
Struggling to find a replacment in UK, or even if there is an alternative we can use.
Thanks for looking.

The digit spacing and leading zero makes me think that's probably 0.2F 3.3V

A parametric search for capacitors with 0.2F or 0.22F (200000uF or 220000uF) value, and a voltage rating between 3.3V and 3.6V in the supercapacitor or ultracapacitor section at your preferred distributor should find something electrically compatible.

If you don't *have* a preferred distributor, here's that search at Mouser UK to get you started: https://mou.sr/2UQkC0O

Thanks, we tried to buy from Mouser but they link back to US site, any other ideas?

RS components, Farnell and Digikey are all likely to have stock in the UK or EU.  CPC may have something suitable, tend to be cheaper than the others but their quality of service can be a bit lacking. If the application isn't safety or business critical, you could try sourcing one from EBAY, but get a 3.6V one not a 3.3V one, and soak-test it overnight at 3.6V on a current limited supply, with the supercap in a fireproof container, and only fit it if it's not warm to the touch in the morning, holds its charge well and finally has about the right capacity (discharge it with a resistor while monitoring the voltage and see how close the voltage vs time data points are to the theoretical exponential discharge curve for its value and the resistor value).

Thanks, a search for 3.6v at RS turned up a suitable match :)

Good.  N.B. my comments about soak testing before fitting only apply to EBAY and other dubious suppliers.

I realise you already found a replacement, but I was curious about the Mouser issue.

I use them occasionally and had no problem finding this using the parametric search function.

Does that link work for you?

Only £1.55,add in the £12 p+p and the chance of getting  caught for vat and rip of vat collection fee it becomes a rather expensive capacitor.

Well, they all have MOV before you get free shipping, and VAT on top.

Rapid have the option to include VAT in the price, icr if Mouser do.

I wasn't trying to steal business away from RS; I use them myself, I was simply curious as to why a UK user was getting re-directed to the US site.
