I am trying to find some inexpensive (ebay, ali) project boxes in the format that plugs into the wall, and you can plug another plug into it.
With some space below of above for a small ESP plus relay.
Something like this:

Does not even need to be with display.
But I cannot find any. I probably search using the incorrect terms:
"Plug through project box"
"mains plug project box"
"schuko project box"
Any one know any?

Make your own, project box with a plug, drill a hole and fit a panel mounted socket

Those kind of timers are often "Special Offers" as day/week timers for 5...10 Euro at Lidl and other discounters. Prolly cheaper than buying an empty case.

Yeah, but too many displays and buttons.
But indeed, I am thinking of getting this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000025426827.html) and gutting it.
Fairly clean and uniform, and I guess I can use one pushbutton.

I've seen single mains socket adapter with a simple switch (destined to disconnect an appliance from mains without unplugging it). It is a little smaller in size and rather cheap, not reliable for high power. Maybe reuse those.
