MCU USB capabilities
« on: March 19, 2019, 07:03:42 pm »
Hello,

I am using an USB OTG (on-the-go) capable MCU.
I would like to know if I could use only one connector to read an USB key and also connect to PC which send commands (not at the same time !).
In the first case, the MCU would be host and in the second it would be device.
As far I understand, I need the 5th pin 'ID' which is only available on mini and micro usb connectors, but I cannot connect a stick on these.
Am I forced to add another connector ?

Thanks for your advice.

No, you can not 'share' a usb port with 2 devices let alone swap between device and host.

That's exactly what OTG does..

Yes, there is no way to get OTG capability on a full size Type A connector. It is against the standard to have USB device on a Type A receptacle.

That last part does not stop some vendoers from China doing that anyway. And this is extremely annoying.

Type-A to Type-A cables exist, but they are not specified in the standard either.

Thanks for your answers. I think I will use two different connectors (A and B) and two separate USB MCU ports.

You can connect a flash drive to a micro-B connector if you get an OTG cable.
