meanwell supplies on aliexpress
« on: May 16, 2019, 10:25:46 pm »
The reviews depict what appears to be authentic product. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Meanwell-EPS-15-single-output-PSU-open-frame-ac-dc-Power-Supply-15W-3-3V-5V/32911331791.html

Im more likely to obtain desktop adapters, are those easier to counterfit than enclosed frame types?

With adapters you buy cat in a sack. Often they are just counterfeit crap, sometimes have recycled PCB salvaged from electronic waste. It makes little sence to buy Mean Well from China, you won't save compared to Mouser.

If you go to the Meanwell site  https://www.meanwell.com/ or at https://www.meanwell.com/aboutLink.htmlyou will find that they are in fact manufactured in China as well as the U.S.A and Europe.2 locations in China , GUANGZHOU and SUZHOU .So it's likely not a counterfeit. Most of the markup  at Mouser ,Digikey ,etc ,are hidden costs associated with stocking ,administration, shipping ,import duties ,etc. Buying from distributors in China you can avoid most of the costs but be prepared to pay import duties .

Do not buy mean well from unofficial suppliers. Maybe it's counterfeit. Maybe it's not. Maybe today it isn't and tomorrow it will be. Not worth the trouble.

I don't whether people are just short sighted or just plain bigoted. Online sales are supported by PowerNex which  is an authorized e-commerce distributor and a member of Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, Aliexpress .Kulpon is a supplier to Alibaba not a direct distributor.

The Mean Well EPS-15 power supplies are only $7.15 from Mouser in single lot quantity. So the Aliexpress price is not such a good deal.

In what way country of manufacture affects in any way the fact PSU sold is genuine or not? There are tons of Chinese and non Chinese brand goods made in China being counterfeited. Mean Well is Taiwanese. Price at Mouser is even a bit cheaper than at Aliexpress BTW. Buying PSU where you can see components is relatively safe but I certainly advise against power bricks.

I don't get what it has to do with particular Aliexpress store or buying this PSU from China?

So far among posters in this thread I have such feeling only against you.

EDIT: POWERNEX store on Aliexpress is dead and on ebay is highly suspicious. It supposedly is not Chinese but Taiwanese. Low sales number, strange account name, sell some food and other crap besides PSUs and is not even business account. I doubt that either real POWERNEX sells on those platforms or is authorized Mean Well distributor to begin with. There is no info other than on their own website and stores. Not to say their website does not even say they are Mean Well authorized distributor.
It says:

PowerNex was founded in 2015, is the first authorized e-commerce distributor and a member of Amazon, eBay, Alibaba, Aliexpress.
And then it says they sell Mean Well PSUs.
I'm tended to think POWERNEX is a one guy sitting on his coach.

Obtained all 3 @ $32 per piece and tested them to ~17amps voltage did not drop below the 5% spec. The serials are authentic and the supply was absolutely new without issues.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mean-Well-GS280A12-C4P-AC-DC-Switching-Adapter-Desktop-Power-Supply-/254222795030?_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l44720&nordt=true&rt=nc&orig_cvip=true

Obtained this also and it also has authentic serial and tested to ~4amps without voltage dropping out to a similar 12v 60W meanwell adapter from mouser. They even warmed nearly identically. Seems adapters are fine if its not out from Aliexpress aside from enclosed frame type of supplies were components can be inspected.

...I'm tended to think POWERNEX is a one guy sitting on his coach.

I met several eBay sellers in person in my area.  This is actually close to truth.  Operation that looks large can be just one person and a part time assistant.  I received good service though.  I also communicated with Chinese sellers.  He IS the whole operation, according to him.  Too small of sample, I know.

As to Chinese sellers, I have so many bad experiences.  Fakes and not able to communicate.  I'm sure there are many good ones but as a buyer, I have no ways to tell.  Comments and reviews are no help either.  I have similar experiences from Amazon sellers as well.  I am Asian and I don't think I'm bigoted or uninformed.  Experiences tell me to be careful.  Sad but a reality we all live in.

I won't trust it, but it looks original to me.
Good thing, you choose an un-enclosed one.
check for a match in model number at meanwell's website
Compare he photos of aliexpress to element 14...down to each component.

If the components are same, the board layout is same...there's no reason it won't act like original
