Modding an auto on/off LED night light
« on: July 20, 2015, 08:57:38 pm »
I have some LED night lights that turn off during the day by way of an LDR and some other bits. I've got some projects I would like to use the night lights to turn on and off, but I am wondering if it would be safe. i measured the voltage between the led and live and came up with 2Vac. Seeing as the projects I want to use these in are just led based I was thinking of just connecting them in place of the stock leds. the other possibility i have come up with is using something else to power the project and using an optoisolator with the night light to switch the project.

I've never seen this type of label for a UL listed product before

It's certainly a capacitive power supply which will not be isolated. The whole circuit should be treated as though it's mains.

Yes, you probably could replace the LDR with an optocoupler.

Have you tried reverse engineering the schematic?

I don't see how that would work - what would be the light sensor?

Instead, he would need to put the optocoupler's LED in place of, or in series with, the original LED.

But, it's probably just as easy to use an LDR to control the new project.

I thought he wanted to replace the light sensor with a signal from another circuit.
