Need help on component that looks like diode.
« on: December 23, 2016, 10:31:03 pm »
I've been at it for 6 hours and have had to throw in the towel.  Google usually finds me what I need.

Having to go to board level to repair many things in late 80s motorhomes as much was aftermarket, and discontinued.  Latest project is the wiper control circuit board.  I have a couple burnt traces which I can handle, but what appears to be a diode (black with silver stripe at the end) and appears to be shorted cannot be found.

Under that silver band is

1101CE
G1 714

I'm assuming that's a one next to the G.

I and others would be grateful for an identification.

Thanks

What shape is it?  Tantalum capacitors can come in black rectangular surface mount packages with a stripe at one end.

A photo would be best.

Yes, diode, replaceable by a 1N5404 3A diode, or any one of hundreds of others. If it is running as protection on a motor i would recommend a 6A diode there instead. The frequent use at 6A is the thing that has killed it, so upgrading to a 6A one which will survive the surges better is a good idea.

Thank you for your input.  I've cross referenced the two part numbers and there seems to be some difference (or just the manufacturers wording)..  One being a fast switch diode, and the other being just a diode rectifier.

Could someone enlighten me?

Thanks

I've been examining the datasets on this, and it seems the 5404 has a lover voltage rating (forward and reverse) will that matter?

1N5404 is rated at 400V

Excuse me, I meant the 5804 in the chart(which is the NTE recommended replacement for the 5404).  I certainly don't need 400V considering its a 12V automotive application.

At this point my choices are NTE588 Which is what the NTE cross ref. recommends for the GI1101, or the suggested one here of an 1N5404 but instead use the  1N5400 (NTE5800 in cross ref.) which would be 50V.

in automotive circuts the power line can have nasty voltage transients so higher might be better..

I want to thank everyone for their input on this which resulted in being able to repair a wiper motor control unit that has not been available for over 20 years.  You made alot of people happy  ;D

Thanks
