NAME THAT GEAR!
« on: February 22, 2019, 08:09:52 am »
Time for everybody's favorite electronics game show...NAME THAT GEAR!

100 points for identifying one of the red arrow items...50 points for anything else on the crate! :) Thanks for playing!

In all seriousness though, does anyone know what those three items are, or anything else there for that matter? Looks like electronic test equipment, or are my eyes lying to me? I definitely see what appears to be a scope, and a few variacs......what do you think, recognize anything?

The scope is a Hitachi V-1060 (the timebase switch is distinctive). No idea about the other instruments.

Super! Thanks mate. I'm gonna try to win that pallet, it's up for auction near me obviously. I'll probably get all that stuff for 40-50 bucks tops, and a little eye rolling from the wife maybe.

I was thinking function generator, and I need one. I thought this was too good to be true, but it could be just my lucky day coming up. This auction is loaded with over 500 lots of electronics...and it has general science lab stuff as well like beakers, stirring hot plates, ovens, microscopes, Teledyne Leeman Lab's Prodigy High Dispersion ICP Spectrometer With Modular Cooling System... :wtf:

I'll need a bigger truck...

Yeah, if that's one lot then I'd grab it just for the sheer joy of tearing down the unknown stuff, the boxes with the blue stripe to the left of the counter, the 'upright' box to the right of the scope look fascinating

I see at least two, possibly three Variacs in there, along with some other power supplies. If you can get that pallet for 50 bucks the Variacs alone are worth much more than that. Plus they are unlikely to be faulty, being so very simple.

eta: Maybe 4 Variacs!

B&K 530 Transistor FET Tester
2 Variacs
Isolation transformer with multiple taps? (large but could be any voltage or condition)
Decade resistance or capacitance box?
Audio gen
Counter
Scope
Few power supplies
Voltmeter or Ammeter

Got to assume nothing works. In general avoid collecting clunky low end gear, your first instinct should be to get rid of most of that pile. If you can keep a few things and make your money back that is the best option

Soldering/Rework: Pace ADS200, Pace MBT350
Multimeters: Fluke 189, 87V, 117, 112   >>> WANTED STUFF <<<
Oszilloskopen: Lecroy 9314, Phillips PM3065, Tektronix 2215a, 314

I am only familiar with oscilloscope in Proteus. Stuff looks really old, you should get rid of this.

They all might be really radioactive, I suggest mailing them to me to be safe.

Jeez I wish we had auctions of electronics once in a while. I should phone the local auction companies, but I don't expect anything like that, this city is too small and non-techy.

Not only at least four, but that teal is kind of telling yeah? This is a semi vintage lot so I assume those are good ol' made in the USA Staco variacs, and built very well, and worth quite a bit.

My addiction is fairly new, and that pallet is already mine in my mind, lol. I am hoping for the best, and if everything is broken, I'll pick the best few things and try to fix them....if I screw everything up, I will tear down and scavenge parts for days and put the rest in my scrap metal pile, and hopefully have learned a few things along the way. Getting it for a decent price will be the key.

Was wondering about those, and yeah...total tear down city, very exciting for a "new player" like me as Dave would say. Even though I am older, I still feel like a kid with wonder when I open things, and contemporary mass consumer smd stuff is quite underwhelming. I love to open older things, check data sheets on components and such. When I find a popular IC or something, I like to learn about it, find a fun schematic, and do a project with it. I'm sure that might eventually get boring but it's fun and interesting now.

It's one of the perks of living in the United States I guess. Metric shit tons of surplus goods in every town across the land.

This particular one is a police seizure auction, it's very large with tons of newer things, so the old pallets of dusty shit usually go for next to nil. I'm pretty excited about this one, nobody has bid on it yet, which is a very good sign.

And you're not even going to tell us what city the auction is in, are you!   :-DD

I wonder what kind of criminal enterprise used all that electronics stuff. It's not a drug lab kind of outfit, it's too old and crusty to be in aid of cybercrime, so ??

It's not in Alaska....:)

And who knows, I often wonder where this stuff comes from, and I feel bad sometimes seeing personnel items at these seizure auctions like clothes and kid's toys and things...But if not me, then it's someone else, oh well. Perhaps they ran sophisticated electrical testing of their meth lab...lol.

Trick is, you gotta live in the area, ...and if you do live in the area and enjoy crusty old electronics let me know! (Now that I think about it, I'm not exactly sure what electronics buddies do. I guess help each other on projects and things, but then the one with more knowledge is going to be the workhorse, and the other one is gonna be sucking sap, lol. Anyway say hi and lets talk if you are in the area, many times I want one or two specific things, and wish I could talk to the winning bidder....(i.e. buy one of those variacs from the winner... :-+ or sell one to the loser...lol)

I have a friend who lives in the area and buys from these auctions. I recognized the picture when we where reviewing the latest auction and taking notes.
